How to Compress a GIF for Discord

A practical workflow for reducing Discord GIF size while keeping the file animated.

2026-04-23

Discord GIF problems are usually file size problems. The GIF may look fine locally, but the upload fails because the animation is too large, too long, or too wide for the place where you want to send it.

Start with GIF compression

If the GIF is only slightly too large, compress it first. This keeps the format as GIF and avoids changing your workflow.

Use the GIF compressor, choose Balanced, and check the result. If the file is still too large, move to Smaller file.

Resize only when needed

Large dimensions can make a short GIF heavy. If compression alone does not work, resize the GIF to 75%. Use 50% only when the platform limit is strict or the GIF is meant to be viewed small.

Avoid these mistakes

  • Do not use a static image compressor for animated GIFs.
  • Do not jump straight to maximum compression if the animation contains text.
  • Do not resize before checking whether compression alone is enough.

Recommended order

  1. Try balanced GIF compression.
  2. Try stronger GIF compression.
  3. Resize to 75% if the file is still too large.
  4. Resize to 50% only when you need a much smaller Discord GIF.
